Opening of New
Top Story

The new top story of Bettws in Bloom was opened on Friday afternoon September 2nd 2005 by HM Lord Lieutenant for Gwent, Simon Boyle Esq. The project as a whole was dedicated in memory of Sir Julian Hodge, a generous benefactor, and the Deputy Mayor of Newport, Councillor Roger Jeavons unveiled a plaque to that effect.

During the afternoon the Secretary, Mr Colin Baker, announced that Bettws in Bloom had won the first prize in the Wales in Bloom competition for Community Educational, Environmental Facilities and Environmental Projects for Your Community.

He said that this was a tribute to all those who had been involved in Bettws in Bloom since it had first been formed. Indeed it was for the whole city.

There were now 56 groups using the facilities provided by the organisation. Bettws in Bloom was there for the whole community of Bettws and for the good of Newport as a whole.

Mr Peter Coleman representing the Julian Hodge Grant Giving organisation spoke warmly of the contribution of voluntary bodies they supported. He said that it was a privilege to represent an organisation that carried on the philanthropic work of Sir Julian Hodge.

Afterwards the invited guests and supporters, who included AM Michael German OBE, Councillors, members of Newport in Bloom, representatives of Grant Giving Bodies, representatives from local organisations, local residents and many others gathered to enjoy a social time and refreshments.
