The Church was built in 1863 and is a typical example of polychromatic Italianate style of architecture. A large Sunday School banner, (1864), hangs on display inside the Church and is in exceptionally good condition
The first Boys Brigade in Wales was started in this church by Mr George Philip Reynolds in 1887 and there is a marble plaque commemorating his life's work on one inside wall.
Outside the church, on the North Street side is a blue plaque depicting the birth of the Boys Brigade in Newport.

The church is a grade 2 listed building and is situated just outside the Stow Hill conservation area.
